Acushla Mkrtschjan is Artistic Director, trainer, teacher and creator of The Sacred Body tribal format (since 2004). Sacred Studios is Adelaide’s longest running school to specialize in Tribal Belly dance (ATS) with studios now located at several dance spaces around Adelaide. Acushla also directs and performs in Adelaide's dynamic and inovative Tribal troupes, Omnia and Cha’rismar while also performing as a solo artist. Her rich dance training history includes Egyptian style belly dance, Bharat Natyam with International performer and dance company director, Shakti Chakravarty, and for the last 7 years has focused primarily on American Tribal Style Belly Dance. She has recently completed general skills and Teacher Training in ATS, and has attained certification in teaching the fcbd format under the instruction of the Carolena Nerricio. Acushla has also learnt from world renown teachers and performers of Tribal, such as Paulette Rees Denis, Rachel Brice, Devi Mamak and Heather Stants. She continues to travel throughout the year to various dance training workshops and festivals to further her skills as a dancer and performer.
The Sacred Body Tribal Format
Acushla developed the Sacred Body Format to be easily incorporated into ATS. The movement vocabulary draws influence from Classical Indian Dance, Flamenco and subtle aesthetics from modern dance. She has travelled to Brisbane and Victoria sharing her Tribal format, and has been invited in 2010 to Tasmania and Sydney (Austalian tribal trance festival) to perform and teach the Sacred Body tribal format.
Performance
Acushla and her troupe regularly perform at various events throughout Adelaide (click here to view most recent). She has appeared as a guest dancer for the live ensemble 'Bazouki Lounge’ as a part of the South Australian Guitar festival and also featured as a special guest for the SA food awards corporate affair.
Acushla is one of the founding members of Ekatã Fusion Arts. This current performance project is a collaboration of Sacred Tribe Dance Studios, the world music group Li Sula and vocalist Bindi Blacher. See Fringe guide for their debut show!
Columnist
Acushla’s passion and commitment to soul awakening and healing has played a major role in her approach and intentions around teaching and performing. This has manifested in her being asked to become a regular columnist of Inner Self publication. Click on the links below to read articles written by Acushla.
